We had the unique opportunity to capture Father Patrick Setto from St. Joseph Chaldean Catholic Church, at Lamassu Art Studio, the creative hub of the talented artist, Reni Stephan, also Father Patrick’s painting teacher. Born in Baghdad, Stephan has been residing in the United States for the past 31 years. With a deep passion for art, he discovered his love for painting and sculpting in middle school. Stephan’s painting expressions often revolve around faith and the challenges that we encounter as human beings.
Stephan's sculptures are imbued with an appreciation for history and his heritage, evident in his collection of sculptures inspired by ancient artifacts from Mesopotamia. Through his art, he aims to revive the lost history of this ancient civilization. Stephan's creations can be found adorning the walls of restaurants, museums, and cultural centers, like the Chaldean Community Foundation.
Father Patrick and Stephan crossed paths when Father Patrick came across Stephan's artwork on display. Intrigued, Father Patrick expressed his desire to meet Stephan. Since then, for the past two years, Stephan has been giving painting lessons to Father Patrick on a weekly basis.
Art serves as a profound medium for religious expression, often finding its manifestations through stained glass windows, mosaics, paintings, sculptures, and more. The harmonious union of religion and art transcends all belief systems, creating a universal language.
We take great joy in sharing this story as an integral part of our faith film, recognizing the intrinsic connection between art and religion.
